At Bryant Schools, we consider each other family. That means we take care of each other and look out for each other’s best interests, which is exactly what Coach Shane Clancy did for a fellow coach recently.
Coach Clancy volunteers in his off-hours to be the staff-member-on-duty during youth football games on our campus. His son is on the 6th grade team, so when the youth teams play here, he opens and closes the stadium.
Last week, during a pee wee football game, Coach Clancy was in his parent/volunteer role, but his professional training was put on display when another volunteer coach fell to the ground, suffering from heat exhaustion. Shane recognized the symptoms immediately. He got help to remove the coach from the field, prepared an ice bath, and had an AED on standby. Because of his training, Coach Clancy was able to help the other coach cool down before paramedics arrived.
"Every year, all the coaches at Bryant are trained on how to react in emergency situations,” Coach Clancy said. “We all have to be CPR certified and trained in first aid… The school district also provides us with all the equipment we need to take action.”
Coach Clancy continued to tell us that he could not have responded without the support of community members who were immediately at his side. We are #BryantProud of the way everyone responded and we are thankful that the volunteer coach is safe and well.
All Bryant coaches receive training with our athletic trainers, watch training videos, and participate in clinics with the Arkansas Athletic Association. Our goal at Bryant Schools is to provide our staff with the tools and knowledge they need to be safe and productive in and outside the classroom. Just like Shane Clancy, we hope all of our staff can BE BOLD, BE BRAVE & BE BRYANT in their actions as we pursue excellence together.
Shane Clancy came to Bryant in 1988 as a student. After graduating, he eventually came back home to coach and raise his own children as Bryant Hornets. He says his favorite part about being a Hornet is the community and the fans, who have always been so supportive of our football program.
