At Bryant High School, a new tradition has been growing over the past two years with the rise of the school’s first-ever pep squad, Code Blue. The squad, led by counselor & coach Karla Jones, was entirely student-driven from its inception. “This was a student-based idea,” Jones said. “I wanted my girls to understand that when you pick something, whether it be a career, a club, or a team: you have to do it with your best self because your work ethic represents you.” Holding her team to high expectations, Jones ensures the members not only bring energy to school events but also excel personally and academically.
For the squad, the commitment goes beyond just practicing routines and performing at pep rallies and games. “We practice every day, sometimes on the weekends,” said senior Alanah Sharlow. “It didn’t start out as a family, but very quickly, with all the practices and things of that nature, we became a sisterhood.” The team members rely on each other for more than just performances, they support each other in academics and life, forming friendships. “We talk every single day, not just about the pep squad, but about life. We help each other with work and everything else,” Sharlow added.
Jones’ leadership extends beyond coaching, shaping her squad members into confident young women. “Not only is she a coach, but she’s a mother figure to us,” Sharlow said. “She makes sure we’re on top of our grades. She does not play about grades. If your grades are not together, you’re not together.” Under Jones’ guidance, the pep squad embodies the spirit of Bryant High School, fostering discipline, personal growth, and unity. “They’re always smiling, they’re always cheering, and they’re doing academically well,” Jones said. “That is what fulfills me, and that is what keeps me doing what I am doing.” Through her dedication, Jones and the squad are not just building school spirit, they are creating opportunities for success.
