After 43 years in the classroom, David Seal's retirement marks not just the end of an era but the beginning of a new journey.
As an educator of over four decades, Mr. Seal is saying goodbye to the only district he has ever known. "I came straight from college with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and a Teaching Certificate in Secondary Mathematics to teach at Bryant when I was 22 years old and I never left. I have been here since July 1, 1981," he recounted. Mr. Seal has taught math to generations of Hornets during his 11 years at Bryant Middle School and 32 years at Bryant High School.
Reflecting on the many changes in education during his tenure, Mr. Seal observed, "We moved from textbooks and worksheets to iPads, graphing calculators, and Promethean Boards. Students today use more technology, so teaching styles and methods have evolved as well. Activities and hands-on learning are integrated with technology to enhance the teaching and learning experience."
The school campuses have transformed significantly as well. Mr. Seal noted that 12 buildings were either built or torn down during his time. The most appreciated addition was replacing box fans with air conditioning, which was not available in the early years of his career. He also witnessed the district's growth in the number of students and teachers. "Some years, we grew so much we didn't have enough classrooms for all the students. Teachers had to share classrooms during their preparation period with other teachers and their classes," he remembered.
One of his most memorable experiences at Bryant High School was being chosen as the 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year and receiving a surprise party from one of his classes in appreciation. "I have so many great memories as a teacher at Bryant. I love Bryant Schools and never thought of going anywhere else!" he said.
Mr. Seal is entering retirement with a heart full of gratitude. "I am thankful for the administrators and the hundreds of teachers and staff members who worked with me. I am thankful for the thousands of students I have been able to teach throughout my 43 years. I will always fondly remember the time spent teaching, mentoring, and helping my students learn and grow."
David and his college sweetheart, Dale, recently celebrated 44 years of marriage. Mrs. Seal taught Art in the Bryant School District for 24 years. They have three daughters, all of whom graduated from BHS with honors. In addition to traveling, he plans to fish, hunt, camp, and watch the Arkansas Razorbacks play football, basketball, and baseball. He also hopes to learn to play the guitar.
"Most of all, I will miss teaching students, interacting with them, and encouraging them to always do their best in whatever they do! I will truly miss being a part of the Bryant Faculty and Team, but I will always and forever be a Bryant Hornet," he said.
Happy retirement, Mr. Seal! Your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
