The PE Facility will be located at the west end of the plaza behind Building 10 with the Fine Arts and Cafeteria on either side, providing covered walkways from building to building and optimal parking for the P.E. Facility and Fine Arts Building to share. It will also allow for the delay of the demolition of Bldg. 2 which reduces the number of portable buildings during construction. The architect is John McMorran of Lewis, Elliott, McMorran, Vaden, Ragsdale, and Woodward.
Update May 2019
Change orders were approved on the BHS Fine Arts Building and PE Facility for extending the date of substantial completion due to delays from more than 70 weather days that have occurred since construction started.
With the change, the Fine Arts building will be completed by November 12 and the PE Facility will be completed by December 31. Moving the dates do not change the cost.
Focus continues to be on completing classroom space in both facilities. The auditorium and arena floor will be the last two areas finished in the facilities.
Update January 2019
As of mid-January, 47 rain days have delayed progress on the buildings. With the rain delays, it’s possible construction on the PE and Fine Arts buildings will not be finished by the start of school. Crews are focusing on completion of the cafeteria. Finishing the back of the house (classroom space) is the priority for the Fine Arts building. The PE facility teams will focus on classroom space as well, leaving the competition floor for later completion.
Savings from the Bethel Canopy ($41,556) and Parkway Elementary ($199,878) were distributed to the three high school projects.
High School Cafeteria
With funds from savings from Bethel and Parkway projects, along with value engineering, the total increase for contingency is $152,126 for a final contract amount of $8,139,815.
After the Value Engineering process, the Board voted on October 18 to accept the change order for the high school cafeteria in the amount of $7,987,689, reducing the original contract amount by $328,890.
On July 19, the Board voted to approve the project price proposal for an amount not to exceed $8,316,579 from Baldwin and Shell for the High School Cafeteria, with the understanding that administration would continue to work with the architect and construction management teams to determine all potential savings.
Fine Arts
With funds from savings from Bethel and Parkway projects, along with value engineering, the total net reduction in bid is $409,808 for a final contract amount of $14,515,798.
At the August 6 special meeting, the Board accepted value engineering options for the Fine Arts Facility, resulting in a proposed $1,420,603 savings, reducing the proposed project price from $14,925,605 to $13,505,002.
On June 21, the Board approved critical path packages (includes concrete, fire protection, plumbing, HVAC, Electrical, and Structural Steel Fabrication) in the amount of $6,180,473 from Baldwin and Shell as part of the building package for the Fine Arts Facility.
PE Facility
With funds from savings from Bethel and Parkway projects, along with value engineering, the total increase for contingency is $55,883 for a final contract amount of $15,846,479.
On October 18, 2018, the Board voted to accept the change order for the high school P.E. Facility in the amount of $15,790,596, reducing the original contract amount by $355,255.
At the August 6 special meeting, the Board approved the building package for an amount not to exceed $16,145,851.00 from Baldwin and Shell for the P.E. Facility, with the understanding that administration would continue to work with the architect and construction management teams to determine all potential savings.
Early Site Packages
The demolition package in the amount of $224,111 from Baldwin and Shell for Love Auditorium, Building 8B, and the four houses on Harris Street was approved by the Bryant School Board on March 5.
On May 3, the Bryant School Board approved the early site package bid for $5,794,785 from Baldwin and Shell for the projects at Bryant High School. The early site package includes demolition of existing buildings, site work, and moving utilities.
Update April 2018:
On February 22, 2018 the board voted to name the new fine arts facility “Bryant Fine Arts Center”. The auditorium will be named Edward Love Auditorium, in honor of Mr. Ed Love who served this district and community for many years.
*The estimated cost for construction were derived from square foot calculations based on several known facts such as possible site locations, timing/scheduling, extensive historical cost data on similar projects in Central Arkansas, market conditions, inflationary impact study, State POR (Program of Requirements) and years of history of working with designs of the architect selected by the district. Estimates were based on costs for 2016.
