Dyslexia Awareness

We are excited to share an important initiative designed to support our K-1 students who have been identified as at risk for dyslexia. The staff at the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children has developed a comprehensive reading intervention program called BUILD: A K-1 Early Reading Intervention. All K-1 teachers at Bryant have been trained in the program by Jessica Johnson, CALT-QI.

BUILD is tailored specifically for young learners. It utilizes a small group format to address the critical components of reading instruction. The program consists of 100 carefully structured lessons designed to meet the developmental needs of kindergarten and first-grade students who may be struggling with reading.

The five key components of the BUILD program include:

  • Alphabet: Students will learn to identify letters, practice sequencing skills, and develop alphabetizing abilities.

  • Letter/Sound Knowledge: This component focuses on direct instruction of individual letters and sounds, which will help students practice reading words and sentences.

  • Phonological Awareness: We will introduce the relationships between speech-sound production, covering everything from rhyming to spelling.

  • Vocabulary: Students will be taught strategies to use context clues to infer the meanings of unfamiliar words.

  • Comprehension: We will explicitly teach specific learning strategies to help students identify the basic components of a story.

Our goal is to create a supportive and effective learning environment where every student can thrive in their reading journey. We are committed to providing the necessary resources and strategies to help our students succeed.
