Be Bold. Be Brave. Be Bryant: Hurricane Creek’s Free Book Fair Inspires Young Readers

At Hurricane Creek Elementary, Library Media Specialist Kass Seidenschnur and PTO volunteer Megan saw firsthand how many students left the school’s book fair earlier this year without the books they wanted due to rising costs. That sparked the question: “Wouldn't it be cool if we could have a free book fair?”Partnering with the PTO, they brought the idea to life. Over 1,200 books were donated by school families, ensuring every student could take home two books of their own.

Seidenschnur and the PTO organized the books into different categories, including chapter books, picture books, board books, and nonfiction, so every student could find something at their reading level and personal interest. The initiative was more than just about giving books: it was about fostering a love of reading that could last a lifetime. “Books are magic,” Seidenschnur shared. “We want to start conversations about books and spark that interest because you never know where that could lead.” The book fair became a community-driven effort, proving that even without business sponsorships, families could come together to provide what their students need.

The event reached new heights with a special guest, Craig O’Neill, who added to the excitement during the school’s Book Character Parade. As children left the fair with books in hand and smiles on their faces, Seidenschnur expressed her gratitude. “We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the generosity of our school families. Together, we are building a community of learners and readers.” Hurricane Creek Elementary’s free book fair is a shining example of being Bold, Brave and Bryant.
