Eighteen Bryant School District students attended a week long adventure at Space Camp and Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama this summer. Participants were challenged with “STEM” (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) based projects while exhibiting teamwork, leadership, and decision-making skills.
Training was similar to what astronauts experience, such as simulating space missions and modeling rocket launches. Older students in the Space Academy program used engineering skills to construct an ablative shield during a Thermal Design Challenge and practiced simulations for the International Space Station.
At Space Camp graduation, students were honored to meet NASA astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson. Gibson is among NASA’s elite astronaut corps who commanded four of the five space shuttles.
